Being Belize's largest producer in the poultry industry, we had to get our act together real quick to be able to supply the demand for a basic food item, chicken, during the Flood of Oct. 2008.
Foreseeing the possibility of an all out flood, where the roads would all get cut off by water we had left all our Trucks at our Belmopan Branch Friday evening which turned out to be a very good decision as later we could not have crossed back over had we wanted to.
When the roads leading to Spanish Lookout all flooded on Saturday October 25 the only means for chicken to be distributed to all the our branches, wholesalers, retailers, shops, and restaurants was to cross it at the Iguana Creek Bridge. The water was appoximately 30 ft. above the bridge so a 25ft mexican skiff was a very good means of transport. We loaded between 3,000 to 5,000 lbs into the boat (approx 120 crate of chicken) and we crossed 10 to 20 boat load of chicken a day for 5 days straight hoping to see the end of the hard work, since all the chicken had to be handle 3 times instead of once during our normal proceedure.(Onto the truck into the boat and back onto the truck that takes it to the Branches)
It was a great relief when on Monday morning the waters had receeded to about 30 inches of water on the Bullet Tree road and that the larger trucks could pass again, hence the stressful distribution of chicken lasted only one long week and things are a bit closer to normal, however we are still waiting to cross the Iguana Creek Bridge which will eliminate the bumpy gravelled roads that adds an hour and a half to the trip to Belize City or Dangriga for example!
